Even though we may not think much about international law,
the work that international lawyers do everyday affects
the lives of many Americans. In this age of high
technology countries have more interaction that at any
other time in history. The US engages in open trading and
allows thousands of immigrants every year. We communicate
with other nations on a daily basis.
Private international law is responsible for ensuring that
all trade and business, including financial, activities
adhere to the governing laws. Therefore all of us who buy
goods manufactured overseas are protected by international
private law. These statutes regulate the legality and
safety of any business conducted by those with
international dealings. Overseas bank deposits are
protected as well by these laws.
International lawyers may practice in a number of
international arenas. Some of these include rules set by
the United Nations; including human rights, prisoners of
war, and overall interactions between nations.
International lawyers are usually concerned with worldwide
foreign policy, global politics, and societal conditions.
Some of these people do government work and others help
private organizations, and still other are in diplomatic
service. This is stimulating work for those interested in
what goes on in the world each day.
International lawyers not only specialize in a particular
function of international law, but also often specialize
in a particular region of the word. For instance, a
lawyer might specialize in advising a country on providing
free and fair elections; these attorneys help local
governments develop democratic elections. International
lawyers also provide assistance to countries on economic
issues, such as complying with regulations related to
NAFTA or the European Union. An international lawyer~s
client may be a country, an individual, or an
organization.
Ever since explorers began crossing the seas, countries
have gone to war over dominion and resources.
International law plays a big part in defining and
protecting the laws regarding all bodies of water. In
current times we need very precise laws regarding use of
local and worldwide waters. These laws affect how
commercial ships, cruise ships, military ships, and even
private boats use the water. Borders are drawn all over
the world to delineate who has access to specific bodies
of water in different regions. Laws governing our waters
are both political and financial in nature.
Human rights are a serious aspect of international law.
Human rights vary significantly around the globe in ways
that those of us living in economic freedom can hardly
understand. International lawyers protect the rights and
dignity of people by establishing laws preventing unlawful
practices such as slavery, abuse, political imprisonment,
and kidnapping. International lawyers are crucial during
times of war. They frequently provide advice on many
issues such as treatment of political prisoners. In fact,
international law affects many aspects of human life.
